Canada announces new sanctions on Russia at G7 ministers’ meeting – National

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is announcing more sanctions on Russia on Wednesday as she hosts top diplomats from the Group of Seven, or G7, countries in the Niagara region.

The sanctions will target those behind Russia’s drone and cyber-attacks on Ukraine, as well as vessels in Russia’s sanctions-evading shadow fleet.

G7 foreign ministers are to hear this morning from Ukraine’s foreign minister as Russia again targets Ukraine’s power grid.

Anand also invited Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and South Korea to take part in the two-day gathering.

The assembled top diplomats will also discuss critical minerals, energy security and economic resilience as U.S. President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies continue to rattle traditional alliances.
