On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, actress Tanya Maniktala looked back on her journey with renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, who played a key role in shaping her career. Tanya expressed her gratitude for being cast as Lata Mehra in the 2020 BBC series A Suitable Boy, directed by Mira Nair.

The British television adaptation of Vikram Seth’s novel was a significant milestone for Tanya, introducing her to a global audience and marking her breakthrough as a performer. Reflecting on the experience, she called working with Mira Nair a life-changing opportunity.
Sharing her thoughts, Tanya said, “On Teacher’s Day, I can’t help but think of the one person who gave me the most beautiful lesson of my life – Mira Di. She didn’t just trust me with the role of Lata Mehra, but also saw me as a performer and as a student of cinema. Working with her felt like attending one of the best acting schools in the world. Every moment on set was a learning experience.”
Tanya adds that Mira Nair taught her how to immerse herself in the character, how to embrace silence, and how to find meaning in the smallest details. “Mira Di gave me my wings and my voice. That experience not only placed me on the global stage but also gave me a sense of responsibility towards my craft,” she said. “Thank you, Mira Di, for seeing Lata in me and for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. You will always be my greatest teacher.”
Through her message, Tanya highlightes the deep bond between a mentor and a student, while also celebrating the importance of those who leave a lasting impact on one’s personal and professional life.
