On September 30, World Podcast Day 2024 was celebrated with a lot of fanfare. On this special occasion, Bollywood Hungama spoke exclusively with Cyrus Broacha. He’s one of the Amazon Music Podcasters and has a fun podcast called ‘Cyrus Says Podcast’. Amazon Music has given podcasters a global stage by marketing them internationally and giving them a presence at Times Square, New York City.
EXCLUSIVE: Cyrus Broacha talks about being an Amazon Music Podcaster; reveals that political satire is possible today like before: “We have to write within the lines and make a point through metaphors”; CONFIRMS that re-release of Raj-DK’s 99 is in the offing
As expected, Cyrus Broacha, in our interview, brought the house down with his witty and tongue-in-cheek replies.
What are your plans for World Podcast Day 2024?
I plan to feed stray animals mostly, in my area to celebrate World Podcast Day, which is such a huge moment not just for me, but for the country and maybe even the continent in general.
How does it feel to be a part of Amazon Music Podcasters?
Being a part of Amazon Music podcasters was a dream come true for me. Ever since I was a young child, I wanted to be part of this team. Other people want to be engineers, lawyers, actors or join the army and so forth. I didn’t want that. I just want to be part of this whole podcast festival and tribe community. So I’m just really happy.
How has your life changed after having your own podcast?
Yeah. After starting my own podcast, life has been very different. I am getting a lot of female attention, mostly from elderly ladies, who usually ask me to go on the other side of the road because they don’t feel safe or comfortable. But generally speaking, that’s a form of recognition, so I can’t complain.
Which was the most fun and exciting guest on your show?
It’s very unfair to say who’s the most exciting and fun guest. We had plenty of good ones, not too many bad ones. But technically speaking, once I’m done with the interview, I just can’t remember anything. It’s more like an exam, you don’t retain much. So to be honest, I’ll have to see and watch and review podcasts from before to answer this question. I can only remember the guest who’s coming, not the guest who’s gone.
Which is that one celebrity that you’d like to have on your show?
I would probably like to have a lot of celebrities who aren’t alive anymore; the celebrities of the right word. But one famous person I would love to have is Alexander The Great. He wouldn’t speak English, but there must be some app that would allow us to sort of Google translate each other. Abraham Lincoln would be fantastic. And then maybe even more glamorous ones like Marilyn Monroe would be great.
What do you have to say about the stand-up comedy scene in India?
The stand-up comedy scene in India is a little strange because it happens at night, which is just too late for me. So it’s tough to have a comment on something which you can’t really keep your eye on. The moment they’re willing to move it to morning and maybe even late afternoon, I can have a handle on this whole thing. But until there’s this whole night thing and unless it’s corporate shows, I just can’t get myself to do it because I have to drink lots of coffee to stay awake. So, perhaps I am not the right person to ask the question, but if you want to know where to walk your dog in peace without the police disturbing you, I’m the guy!
At one point, you used to have a funny show on News18 called ‘The News That Wasn’t’ which used to take a dig at politicians. Its clips are often shared on social media and it is said that a show of this kind is not possible in India in today’s times. What are your thoughts?
Oh, point number one. It wasn’t a funny show. It was supposed to be an abstract show like modern art. Secondly, I think it’s very possible to do that. I don’t think the times are that bad and people sometimes overreact. We just have to perhaps, write within the lines and make a point through metaphors and things like that. Nothing is impossible. Forms of satire have survived through everything – even through times when it was difficult to speak openly.
You acted in very few films though your performances have always been loved. Why was that?
When it comes to films, you have to ask people who make the films because not enough people want to cast you. You know, we’ve gone to Adarsh Nagar and begged producers and directors to put us in scenes where there are corpses or people lying in the background. But, we got no sort of callbacks. That’s why I’m trying to get more casting directors on the podcast. I’ve got a plan, an evil plan.
In the age of re-releases, how would you react if 99 (2009) arrives in cinemas again? It’ll have more takers as it looks fresh and is directed by Raj-DK, who are much celebrated today…
We spoke to Anupam Mittal, the producer, and he actually said that there’s an idea to actually do it because there was a big strike when the film first released. Hence, it was very difficult to keep it in theatres. There were a lot of people trying to pressure them to take the film off. And so they had to. I think they are actually trying to re-release it, maybe they’ll have to change the name from 99 to 100 because, you know, times have gone ahead.
