In an interview with Variety, Teague revealed that while he formed close bonds with the chimpanzees, he kept a safe distance from the orangutans. He also detailed the physical challenges he faced in embodying the movements of a chimpanzee. He said, “There’s something very soft about the way that chimps move. Their hands are just super loose.”

“Man, they smell terrible,” he added. “Our evolutionary predecessors were stinky guys.”

“They’re very economical,” Teague said. “You don’t see them sit down and then shift around to get comfy. They plant themselves in the exact right place and stay there. They’re so physically present. Humans are always kind of shifting our feet and doing stuff with our hands.”

Under the guidance of a movement teacher, Teague practised walking on his knuckles using specially designed sawed-off crutches. Teague said, “When apes hit the ground it’s like — Boom! Boom! Boom!” Teague asaid. “So it can be painful.”

These props initially caused him significant elbow pain, but after the designers added more springs to improve comfort, Teague was able to adapt. He added, “I was living in Crown Heights, and I would take them out at night and run around the neighborhood on all fours. And, of course, it’s Brooklyn, so everybody’s just like, ‘Eh, whatever.’”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, is the fourth installment in the popular Planet of the Apes franchise. The film takes place several generations after Caesar’s reign, in a world where apes are the dominant species and humans live on the fringes. A tyrannical new ape leader is rising to power, prompting a young ape named Noa to embark on a perilous journey that will challenge everything he knows about the past. His choices will determine the future for both apes and humans.

The film stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. The screenplay is written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison.

20th Century Studios India will release Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in theaters on May 10, 2024, in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
