Veteran actress Mumtaz has sparked debate after expressing her disapproval of Zeenat Aman’s recent social media post promoting live-in relationships for youngsters. For the unversed, Zeenat Aman advocated for couples to cohabitate before marriage. She shared her perspective on Instagram, stating that living together allows couples to assess compatibility before making a lifelong commitment.
Mumtaz DISAGREES with Zeenat Aman’s live-in advice, calls it an attempt to sound like a “cool aunty”: “Marriage needs maintenance”
This stance has garnered support from fans who view it as “modern” and “progressive.” However, Mumtaz presented a contrasting viewpoint in a recent interview. She questioned the effectiveness of live-in relationships in guaranteeing marital success.
In an interview with Zoom, Mumtaz asserted, “Kitna bhi live-in kar lo, kya guarantee hai (What is the assurance that even after living-in together your marriage will be a success)? Main toh kehti hoon, marriage hi nahin honi chahiye. What is the need to tie yourself down in this day and age? Why marry? For children? Arrey, go out there, find the man who appeals to you, and get his baby without physical intimacy. Zamana bahot aage chala gaya hai (the society had evolved).”
The veteran actress spoke about the importance of marriage as a social institution. She highlighted the need for effort and commitment in maintaining a successful marriage, stating, “Shaadi nibhani padti hai (Marriage needs maintenance).”
Explaining her take further, she said, “Zeenat should be careful with what she is advising. She has all of a sudden come into this huge social media popularity, and I can understand her excitement about sounding like a cool aunty. But giving advice that is counter to our moral values is not the solution to increasing your following.”
Mumtaz argued that Zeenat’s own experience with a difficult marriage weakens the credibility of her advice. “She knew Mazhar Khan for years before marrying him. Her marriage was a living hell,” Mumtaz stated, suggesting that cohabitation might not always be a reliable indicator of marital success.
While Mumtaz and Zeenat hold contrasting views, actress Celina Jaitly offered a middle-ground perspective. Jaitly acknowledged the ease of separation in live-in relationships, suggesting it might discourage couples from putting in the effort to resolve conflicts. However, Manisha Koirala opted out of the debate, stating she wasn’t qualified to offer relationship advice.
