In her interview with The New York Times, she delved into her character in the film and shared insights into collaborating with Dev Patel, the multifaceted talent behind the action thriller. In Monkey Man, she plays Sita, a call girl whose business is the pleasure of powerful but despicable men. Asked what it was like being able to make a career out of playing characters on the margins, like in Monkey Man, Sobhita said, “Those are really beautifully complex humans. To be considered someone who can be trusted with characters like that is really an honour… If something inspires me or there’s some value I can bring to the story, I want to belong with it.”

Sobhita also opened up about how even before the release of her first film in India (Anurag Kashyap’s 2016 movie Raman Raghav 2.0), she auditioned for the role of Sita in Monkey Man. The actor said it took the team several years to get back to her, and in 2019, Dev told her that he had decided that she would be perfect for the role from the moment he saw her audition.

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meagre living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Monkey Man is produced by Dev Patel, Jomon Thomas, Oscar winner Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler and Anjay Nagpal. Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney and Steven Thibault serve as executive producers.

Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. The film’s international cast includes Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher and Makarand Deshpande.

Monkey Man landed in theaters worldwide on April 5. It is yet to be released in India.
