He defined his perspective, stating, “There’s been a lot of debate on Animal… Personally, truly honestly, I saw it as a character film based on a character who was deeply dysfunctional, inherently violent, who had many emotional issues – and I loved the treatment.”
The 51-year-old filmmaker highlights how he was particularly impressed by Vanga’s storytelling and technical execution, rather than focusing on the film’s moral message. “I did not go deep into the ethical communication of the movie – I used to be so swept by the narrative and the way in which the filmmaker advised the story of it…”
He continued and stated that even if his opinion attracts criticism, he feels a responsibility to be honest about his artistic appreciation. For the unversed, at the Mega Pan India Roundtable 2023 organized by Galatta Plus, Karan said that Animal is the best film of the year, and its success is a ‘game-changer.’
Animal’s critical reception was divided, with some praising the performances, particularly Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri. However, veterans like Javed Akhtar and Swanand Kirkire were among those who voiced strong disapproval of the film’s content.
